• What is Higher Ground Abodes?
  Higher Ground Abodes is a Detroit-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit creating affordable, community-controlled housing for people with extremely low incomes. We combine housing, cooperative living, education, and advocacy.

• Who does Higher Ground Abodes serve?
  Our work focuses on Detroiters with extremely low incomes, including young adults aging out of foster care and others who face significant barriers to safe, stable, affordable housing.

• What is cooperative housing?
  With cooperative housing, residents do more than simply rent a place to live. They share responsibility for their home, participate in decisions, share resources, and build community together.

• How is Higher Ground Abodes different from semi-independent living program?
  No. Our home is not an adult foster care home or a semi-independent living program. Residents have a real voice in how their household operates. The goal is to create a home where young adults can build stability, practice shared decision-making, and responsibility.

• How does Higher Ground Abodes keep housing affordable?
  We take housing out of the traditional speculative model. Higher Ground Abodes stewards the property for the long term, helping protect its affordability while residents benefit from cooperative living and shared resources.

  There are several ways to participate. You can volunteer, donate, become a community or organizational partner, contribute professional services, or help spread the word about our work.
