Our Work.

Welcome to Higher Ground Abodes, a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to transforming the landscape of affordable housing in Detroit through shared housing, education, and advocacy.

Level Up Saturday Cooperative Camp

Our Cooperative Day Camp, aptly named “Level Up,” offers a transformative experience for youth transitioning out of foster care. Through engaging activities and collaborative learning, participants not only gain an understanding of housing cooperatives but also develop the ability to create a sustainable housing solution tailored to their needs. With a focus on empowerment and building a supportive network, our camp equips participants with the tools, resources, and resilience needed to overcome systemic barriers to affordable housing. Community Presentations:

Low-income? Seeking affordable housing? If you or someone you know is in need of affordable housing and is open to shared living arrangements, we invite you to reach out to our team to learn more about the "no-landlord" option for affordable housing. Request a presentation.

Sponsoring Cooperative Ownership

Higher Ground Abodes provides both financial and in-kind support to eligible individuals seeking residency in housing cooperatives or collectives. We cover membership fees for selected individuals joining a cooperative and offer closing cost assistance to established groups working towards purchasing their shared home. Learn more.
Housing Development

In collaboration with the Conant Gardens Neighborhood Development Corporation, Higher Ground Abodes is proud to announce our initiative to establish a home for youth in the historic African-American community of Conant Gardens, located in northeast Detroit, Michigan. Conant Gardens holds a significant place in Detroit's history as one of the most exclusive Black neighborhoods in the city. Its residents, known for their educational achievements, formed a highly educated Black enclave within Detroit. However, like many urban neighborhoods, Conant Gardens has faced its share of challenges over the years, and our special project will be just one of many efforts designed to restore the community to its former glory. Join us as we revolutionize traditional living arrangements and empower these young individuals to thrive.

Developing Cooperative Communities

Higher Ground Abodes provides us with mentorship and guidance. They help us set up our structure, find collaborators and partners. Behind the scenes, they’re holding our hands, providing support. They also find people to donate things we need, like furniture.”
